Yoga at home

How to create your yoga corner at home (no building work, no big spend)

The tips I share are general and do not replace a professional. Listen to your body and see a specialist if you have an injury or a health condition.

Practising at home has something wonderful about it: you can do it whenever you like, however you like and in your pyjamas (yes, pyjamas count too 😄). But if every time you have to move the sofa, look for your mat and clear the clothes off the chair… you end up not practising. The solution: a small corner that invites you to stop.

1. Find your couple of square metres

You don’t need a whole room. A space where your mat fits and you can stretch your arms without bumping into anything is enough. Ideally somewhere quiet, where people aren’t walking past while you practise.

2. Natural light and fresh air

If you can, set up near a window. Natural light helps you feel more awake in the morning and calmer in the evening. Open the window a little before you start: breathing fresh air changes your practice.

3. Your props, always within reach

If your props are tucked away at the back of the wardrobe, you won’t use them. Leave your mat rolled up and your blocks in sight, in a basket or against the wall. As well as being practical, it’s a daily reminder that this time is for you.

With two blocks you have many more options: one under each knee to open your hips, one on top of the other to gain height, or one under your bent knee in forward folds.

4. Less is more

A yoga corner doesn’t need magazine-style decor. A plant, a candle, natural colours… and not much else. The fewer things around you, the easier it is for your mind to settle too.

5. A small ritual to begin

Light a candle, play your favourite music or simply sit on your block and take three deep breaths. A simple gesture that tells your body: “now it’s time to stop”.
